Pre-Application Overview

National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification® (NCTRC®) offers a Pre-Application Review Process designed to assist potential applicants in determining whether they meet current NCTRC Certification requirements prior to submitting a Professional Eligibility application.

This is an optional process and is not required as part of the Professional Eligibility Review process. Read the details below for more information.

Complete the Pre-Application Review Process through the MY NCTRC LOGIN portal.

This application is an optional process and is not required as part of the Professional Eligibility Review.

The Pre-Application Review options include the following:

Options:

  • TR coursework (multiple course listings per application are permissible),
  • supportive coursework (multiple course listings per application are permissible),
  • completed professional experience (completed internships and paid professional work experience).

The fee is $50.00 per option that is submitted for review.

Please submit fees with the application.

NCTRC suggests applicants review the current NCTRC Certification Standards regarding eligibility requirements, including educational and professional experience requirements outlined in the Path to Professional Certification.

  • Pre-Application applications will be reviewed by using current NCTRC review procedures.
  • The application review will be completed within four weeks of receipt.
  • The Pre-Application Review Process is not intended to replace the formal Professional Eligibility Application process.
  • This is an optional process and is not required as part of the Professional Eligibility Review process.

This process will allow for early confirmation that completed coursework will meet current NCTRC eligibility requirements in accordance with the NCTRC Certification Standards.

In accordance with NCTRC’s Path to Professional Certification, the coursework requirement for the Professional Eligibility Application process includes completion of Therapeutic Recreation Content and Supportive Coursework in accordance with NCTRC Certification Standards.

Coursework Review Options:

  • TR coursework
  • Supportive coursework

Pick one or more coursework review options and list the title of the course(s) you would like to have reviewed within the appropriate section of the application. Only courses listed on the application will be reviewed.

Please submit either an official, original printed or electronic transcript for the review. Electronic transcripts need to be sent directly to NCTRC from the registrar’s office. For courses in which the title is not clearly defined on the transcript or if the course content is not clearly presented, please submit all related course syllabi, as necessary, describing the nature and scope of the course(s).

For complete details, review the NCTRC Certification Standards.

For individuals using the Professional Experience option, this process will allow for pre-approval of completed professional experience, which includes both completed internships and paid professional work experience. See professional experience requirements outlined within the current NCTRC Certification Standards.

The Pre-Application Coursework Review Process is not intended to replace the formal Professional Eligibility application process.

Applicants who receive notice that submitted coursework, academic internship, and/or paid work experience information was not approved by NCTRC during the Pre-Application Review Process have no formal process of appeal.

A formal appeal process is available to candidates during the Professional Eligibility review process.

Once the pre-application review is complete, it is the applicant’s responsibility to determine next steps to proceed to acquire the specific education and professional experience requirements to apply for Professional Eligibility.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to monitor changes and current eligibility requirements within the NCTRC Certification Standards.

Pre-Application Review Fee: $50.00 per review option.
